What is awareness through movement ?

During an Awareness Through Movement (ATM) session, as say the words, you will learn to get aware of your body (mechanics of your skeleton) by doing movements. Playful, interesting movements which are taken from what we have been doing as babies when we had no muscles but only our skeleton and gravity to help us get on our feet. We thus relearn what we have learnt already.
A unique characteristic to the Feldenkrais Method of somatic education is that these lessons tie directly into functional movements of daily life, such as walking efficiently, safely lifting objects, and improving one’s posture in sitting or standing.

You can expect a class to last somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes. You might walk, stand, or sit in a chair, although usually, you will lie on the floor in a variety of comfortable positions: either on your back, front, or side. You will be guided through a sequence of movements, that should be executed very gently without being painful and with full attention to what happens in your body.

You may become aware of unexpected and interesting connections within your anatomy. As you attend to the improving quality of movement, unnecessary muscular tensions throughout the body can reorganize and release.

Anyone, at any level, can do ATMs and benefit, from accomplished athletes (to release unnecessary tensions) to people who do not like to exercise. From the first lesson they follow, most people feel better after class: in general they stand taller, feel lighter, more flexible, and more grounded.

As sessions will mostly be taught in series, to get a better experience I advice you to take part in a whole series which can consist of 4 to 10 sessions.

I am currently looking for a place to give live classes, in the meantime I am teaching online classes for FREE until April.

In the next series I will teach lessons to learn how to walk and run with our whole body. You will be able get aware of the role of your back, shoulders, head, hips and other parts in your walking/running. Maybe you will notice some habits in your movements which cause pain or disable you to get more performance. You will be able to retrain your mind and muscles to change those habits in your movements and improve your strength, coordination, distance and speed.
